When my friend Brooke plans a birthday party (or does anything for that matter)… I am all eyes and ears! She is like magic when it comes to all things creative (speaking my language!) So when she recently planned a birthday party for her daughter, I knew I had to share it with you!
Sweet Joelle turned six and celebrated a purrr-fect birthday with her friends. (I know, I had to… more of that to come.) But what I can’t get over are all the details! Planning a special day for your little one takes some time and effort, but with some heads-up planning, you can certainly create a “dreamy” day for all. I’ve broken down a few to-do’s when it comes to birthday party planning that can help send you down the right track!
*Seek advice from your birthday kiddo! It is their big day… let them guide you in the decision-making and theme selection. Let them assist in DIYs and party-prep… that way they can take some ownership of the party and build that anticipation!
*Choose a color theme and stick to it! I look for inspiration everywhere when starting to think about a party… an invitation, fabric, napkins, decor accessories, a dress– you name it and you can use it as your centerpiece for which the rest of the party is planned around! I am particularly obsessing with Brooke’s idea of using soft pastel colors, gold accents and the bold black & white stripe! What a statement the dessert table made because of it!
*Create a photo backdrop to capture sweet moments with friends. This is an easy DIY that won’t break the bank and creates a fun-filled activity at the same time. I love how Brooke used a plain white backdrop that she carried onto the floor. By adding the adorable tagline of the party, it really sets the stage for the photos. The balloons in various shades of pastel peaches and pink are that perfect pop of color!
*Say yes to goody bags! I know they are more work and more cost, but how many years are we going to get to pass out goody bags? Surely, it’s limited. I love searching for little goodies to put in the bags that are related to the theme and/or color palate. And, who doesn’t love a little personalization? Write the guests’ name on each one like Brooke did here… even fancier with a gold pen. This is also another great opportunity to tie in the theme… see the cutest, little kitty stickers on each bag below.
*Get your DIY on and make something for the guests to keep/wear. Or, you can create a station where they can make their own accessory. These cat-earred headbands are the purrr-tiest little things you ever did see. I can just hear the squeals and giggles of excitement as each girl got to pick out her own.
*Take something ordinary and make it extra special. Brooke did that here by wrapping the individual milk cartons in a little label that let all the guests know– these are just for this party and for all of you kitties! How cute is that? Other ways to incorporate turning something ordinary into so much more: bubble wands turned fairy wands with some ribbon for a magical theme or toilet paper rolls turned binoculars for a camp out theme.
*Go all out and break out the face paint! How sweet are these girlies with their little kitty noses and whiskers? You don’t have to hire a professional for a little drawing, just a simple face painting station and a willing volunteer (preferably one with a little drawing experience, wink, wink).
*Get creative in the kitchen! Think of all the things that your party theme could encompass and add those extra details! Such as, goldfish crackers served in paper cones with kitty stamps or kitty-shaped cookies and donuts! This is your time to think outside the box and let Pinterest be your best friend.
*Use the fancy dishes for displaying the food. I mean, you have kept that antique platter all this time… break it out! Now’s the time! I think little girls would totally appreciate the fanciness! (I know mine would!)
*Go for the fan favorite of a pinata! Perhaps you are thinking they are cliche or you feel the pressure to make you’re own– don’t! This is a child’s party “must” and with all the pinatas that are pre-made these days… save your energy and time on the rest of the details… here’s where you can buy one right off the shelf. (Do stick a few non-candy items in the pinata for those who are sugar-free… it’s more fun when they can search for goodies too.)
*Absolutely use your camera. If you are the distracted type (I’ve been there…), assign someone to document the big day! Make sure you get pictures of all the fun and even of all your hard work, the decor & details!
*Don’t forget the cake! Opt for a handmade cake (perhaps a practice round is in order) or commission a friend (who happens to be a baking goddess) to help out! Bigger is not always better… a sweet, little cake with just the right detail is paw-sitively purr-fect.
Now you have some ideas of “how-to” create your little one’s beautiful birthday party… now start the planning! Enjoy the process… all too soon our babies will grow up and we will be wishing for the days of kitty parties.
