Summer is quickly approaching and its got some of us mamas all: “Yay, I can’t wait to have my kids home,” and some of us mamas all: “How in the world am I going to keep my kids busy and entertained all summer?!” And truthfully, I bet most mamas are like me and feel both: “Yay and oh my.”
Well, I have a fun (and really cheap) DIY that will keep your kids busy for at least one afternoon! I actually stumbled upon this idea as I was searching for a gift for a two-year-old girl. I wanted to recreate a variation of our backyard playhouse (see that post here) in a much more affordable, portable and whimsical sort of way. I found a DIY post on Pinterest (see that post here) that gives a step by step tutorial of how to create a collapsible, cardboard playhouse.
To create the playhouse, follow the instructions on that post. From there, you basically have a blank canvas and can create any type of playhouse you can imagine! You can even turn it over to your kids and let them go to town creating their own unique design! And chances are, you have some extra paint or markers lying around so really the cost is just the cardboard. (And tape, if you don’t have any on hand. We’re from the “duct tape fixes everything” part of the country so, we always have it on hand.)
For this playhouse, I stuck with the modern farmhouse theme of black and white. I used the utility knife to cut out squares for the windows and then lined them in black duct tape. Since I was giving this to a two-year-old girl, I wanted it to be fun (enter: lots of paint and my child-like artistic ability)! And of course, it had to say her name on her house! The best part about this house: the bottom folds up and the back folds out allowing for it to be easily stored! True, this might be a temporary playhouse (I mean, it’s made out of cardboard) but, it should provide hours and hours of fun!
2 Medium size boxes (I bought these at Home Depot and splurged the extra $1 per box for the heavy-duty version still making the total under $5)
White duct tape
Black Duct tape
A utility knife
White paint and then any other colors you have laying around to give your house character and personalization
